      September 1, 2010

Joan Zecherle, Faith Community Liaison for Hospice of the Valley, will be the speaker for September 1 meeting of the Fountain Hills Parkinson Support Group.  The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Fountain Hills Community Center.

She will speak about the hospice philosophy of care that focuses on maintaining the dignity and comfort of the patient and supporting the family.  Most Hospice of the Valley patients are served in their own homes. Some are cared for in group homes or nursing homes.  Hospice inpatient units also are available for patients whose symptoms can't be managed at home.

Zecherle’s topic will be “Dispelling the Myths of Hospice.”  For example, she will be able to assure attendees that if improvement in the patient’s condition occurs and the disease appears in remission, a patient can be discharged from hospice and return to receiving regular treatment.  If a discharged patient elects to return later to hospice care, Medicare and most private insurance plans will cover it.  According to Zecherle, Medicare allows people to go on and off hospice as needed.  Hospice coverage is provided by Medicare nationwide, by Medicaid in most states, and by most private health insurance policies. There is no charge to the patient for hospice services.  Individuals who need assistance and cannot attend the meeting may contact Joan Zecherle at her Hospice of the Valley office at 602-530-6900, since there is no charge for hospice services.

Niobe Borman, one of the caregiver members of the local PD support group, is asking those who attend to bring their appetites.  She is celebrating a special birthday and is arranging for the delivery of pizza from Phil’s Filling Station and Grill during the refreshment break.

The Fountain Hills Parkinson Support Group meets monthly - usually on the first Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Senior Center.  PD patients, their caregivers and anyone who is interested in learning more about Parkinson’s are all encouraged to attend.  The meetings are informal.  For more information, call the Senior Center at 480-816-5888 or Mary Stone at 480-816-6080. There is no charge to attend any of the group’s meetings.

More Than Words Can Say – Expressive Art Workshop

Come join us for the new Expressive Art Workshop especially designed for people with Parkinson and their care partners. We want you to tell your story, your hopes, and dreams in a very fun but meaningful way. You will choose your favorite word or words and interpret it with artistic images!

Have you heard the expression “An image is worth a thousand words”? Well, you will use the power of imagery to convey your message and be heard with more than words can say! Participants will paint, but also will be able to use stamps, fabrics, pictures, and any other materials they might want to collage into their personal master pieces. In five (5) artistic sessions, art instructor Gregory Pearce will be your guide and chef, making fun, camaraderie, relaxation, and learning the regular ingredients!

You don’t need to have any previous artistic skills or experience to participate in this workshop. All works would be eligible to enter the Annual Parkinson Art Juried Exhibition to be held in April 2011. You are not alone in this journey; there are many people like you living with Parkinson’s disease who have a lot to say. Come and help us tell this collective story; together we can go beyond what words can say!

Cost: $30 per person, for 5 sessions (materials are included)

research.  Not one penny comes out for administrative

costs.  We have raised this amount in just one year

and a half!
