      March 3, 2010 Support Group

                  Monthly Meeting

According to Dr. Holly Shill, the number of people with Parkinson’s disease in the United States is expected to double by the year 2030.   Dr. Shill, a noted neurologist, said Parkinson’s is usually associated with older adults.  However, she anticipates seeing a dramatic increase in the number of cases as Baby Boomers grow older.  Shill will be the featured speaker at the March 3 meeting of the Fountain Hills Parkinson Support Group.  The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Fountain Hills Community Center.

Dr. Shill is Director of the Christopher Center for Parkinson’s Research at Sun Health Research Institute and is staff Physician at Sun Health Neuroscience Associates Sun City, Arizona.  Holly Shill, MD, grew up in Tempe, Arizona.  She did her undergraduate work in electrical engineering at University of Arizona in Tucson, followed by four years of medical school there. She completed a neurology residency at Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) in Phoenix. Following that, she spent three years as a clinical fellow in the Human Motor Control Section at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Shill spends approximately 60% of her time in the clinic, managing patients with movement disorders, and 40% of her time in research. Her research interests include risk factors for the development and progression of Parkinson’s disease and innovative treatments for Parkinson’s. She also studies pathogenesis of Essential Tremor.

All meetings of the Fountain Hills PD support group are open to anyone interested in learning more about Parkinson’s.  For more information, call Mary Stone at 480-816-6080. There is no charge to attend any of the group’s meetings.

Our local PD support group has raised $3,600 in

pennies for our Pennies for Parkinsons - until there's a

cure fund drive.  Every penny goes to the MAPC for

research.  Not one penny comes out for administrative

costs.  We have raised more than $3,600 in just one year

and a half!

The Fountain Hills Parkinson Support Group, the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, Fountain View Village and the Fountain Hills Art League are sponsoring a juried art show that is open to persons with Parkinson’s disease who reside (full or part time) in Arizona. Artists may submit two pieces for consideration by the jury.  We will accept only work that is original.  Photos used as a basis for your work must be your own. Hanging pieces must be framed with framing wire that is taught and securely attached five inches from the top - full width of the frame and ready to be hung.  Selection of two and three-dimensional work will be considered, in part, by the size of the piece. Artists who enter must be Parkinson’s patients or PD caregivers.

Selected artwork must be delivered to the Fountain Hills Community Center on Thursday, April 1, 2010 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and noon.  Selected artwork will remain on display until Friday, April 30, 2010.  On that day, artists must reclaim their work between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and noon.  Special arrangements for delivery and pickup dates can sometimes be made when distance is a factor.  All accepted pieces will be considered for awards.

We look forward to your participation in this juried art show.  We extend an invitation to you and your guests to attend a reception on Friday, April 9 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
